The Community Mural Wall

A Participatory Outdoor Art Space for Rotating Projects

Located behind the JAC on Douglas Street

"Sweater Weather”

December 11, 2021 - February 5, 2022

The latest project on the Community Mural Wall invites visitors to aid in the whimsical progression of the chilly scene depicted on the mural wall from December 11 - February 5.

The project is inspired by the book “Extra Yarn” by Mac Barnett about a young girl who finds a never-ending box of yarn and knitting to her hearts content, covering her town with sweaters.

Cosima Eyre, pictured here, created the project during her internship with the JAC while a student at the MET School.

Family-friendly, and accessible to all ages.

From July 2 - July 11, see all of the 265 artwork proposals by the art students at the Melrose School on display on the Community Mural Wall.

Under the direction of art instructor Erica Connolly, the 265 art students at the Melrose School (Pre-K through 4th grade) in Jamestown each drew an artwork proposal for the Spacing Out(side) request for proposals in early spring, 2021. The students then voted on one proposal to create together to represent the school. Spacing Out Together, conceived by First Grader Brooke Montoya, was the selected piece and it was then chosen for installation along the bike path off Eldred Avenue in Jamestown as one of four outdoor artworks for Spacing Out(side).

We Stick Together

November 2020 - January 2021

Inspired by the Tape Art Crew, the JAC invited members of the public to contribute life size self portraits made entirely in tape to their latest project for the collaborative outdoor mural wall. The Tape Art movement began in 1989 in Providence, Rhode Island with large collaborative drawings in public spaces made entirely of tape. These large, mural-like works are both intricate and ornate and whimsical and accessible in their medium.

The aim of "We Stick Together." a tape art project, is to fill the community wall with all different kinds of people for whom we are thankful for this season. To learn more about the 30 year history of Tape Art in Rhode Island and worldwide, visit tapeart.com

Read more about "We Stick Together” in the Jamestown Press.

The outdoor mural wall is located by the Douglas Street parking lot behind the JAC and is available during daylight hours beginning November 14. Tape supplies and drawing instructions are on site.

Please observe social distancing.
