Request for Proposals:

Temporary Outdoor Mural Wall

Built in 2020 in response to bringing art outdoors in the pandemic, our new outdoor mural wall is 10’ x 10’ square. We are seeking proposals featuring artwork that is bold, colorful, engaging, and/or experimental and suitable for all audiences in this family-friendly space. Ideally, artwork proposals will relate to one of the gallery exhibitions during the season.

Applications will be reviewed and selected by the Exterior Initiatives committee. Emerging artists, BIPOC, women, gender-nonconforming persons, LGBTQIA+ community members and people with differing physical abilities are highly encouraged to apply. Artists living across Rhode Island are highly encouraged to apply.

Stipend for creation of work: $500

PRACTICALITIES:

The mural area is 10’ x 10’ square and constructed of plywood with a smooth MDF finish. The wall can host artworks that can be primed over at the end without damaging the surface of the wall. Alternatively, the wall can be covered with canvas stapled around the edges. We will not approve artworks that might damage the surface. Attachments can be made around the framed edges, if necessary.

Materials and paints are available from Guerra Paints & Pigments at the JAC for the artists’ use. Any additional materials required will be at the artist’s expense. Priming of the wall will be performed by the JAC. Artist is responsible for all other work in creating and executing the artwork. Artist is an independent contractor, and for the work will receive a $500 stipend. If chosen, the JAC will work with the artist to establish an installation and removal schedule. Artwork as executed must be substantially similar to artwork as proposed; any changes must be agreed upon beforehand. All mural works are temporary, and artist will sign a contract agreeing to the removal of the work without remedy at the end of the period. JAC will provide identifying signage.

The wall is viewed by vehicle traffic leaving the library and traveling on Valley Street, and by families visiting the community playground. Accordingly, all artworks must be suitable for display in a public setting. Artworks containing nudity, profanity, or sexual content will not be approved.
