Summer Camp: Mini Fools’ Rules Regatta

Ages : 6 - 12

This camp is currently full- please email seamus@jamestownartcenter.org to get on the waiting list.

Have you ever thought to build something out of materials that you normally consider trash? This camp allows campers to see “trash” in a new light! We will be creating large and small scale sculptures using materials such as bottle caps, plastic containers and bottles, styrofoam, bubble wrap, wood scraps and anything else that you might normally find hanging out in the trash can or recycling bin at home. Campers will create these sculptures with an emphasis on artistic design, creativity and function.

Mini Fools Rules Regatta Camp is inspired by the Annual Fools Rules Regatta organized by the Jamestown Yacht Club every summer, where for the past 40 years participants build life-sized boats out of unconventional materials. We will not be making sculptural boats that are large enough to actually sail, but sculptures should be made with the intention to float. Each camper will receive an award: most creative, most likely to stay afloat, most luxurious, etc. Camp participants will be encouraged to bring in recyclable materials to build their artistic boat. The last session will be held at East Ferry Beach in Jamestown to sail our Mini Fools’ Rules sculptures — family and friends are welcome to come watch!

Please wear appropriate clothing, as there is potential for spills and stains. Campers should bring a snack and water bottle each day.

Be prepared to paint looser, bolder, freer, lighter and more intuitively. This wild workshop is about jumping off the cliff and creating artwork no one has ever seen you do. Splashes, tissue papers and collage —  anything goes from there. This is an acrylic workshop – with a bit of mixed media/collage added for visual impact. Torn Paper Paintings Workshop with Wanda Edwards

Ages : Adults

Learn a figurative collage technique using bits of torn paper! Similar to Impressionists use of colors or the tiles in a mosaic, Torn Paper Paintings’ unconventional collage technique creates this same visual interest. We will explore hand painting and designing of our own papers to be used in the piece. Rice papers, book pages, maps, store-bought papers, as well as personal ephemera will be applied over a simple under-painting (done at home as class prep) in a painterly fashion. The collage process will be demonstrated throughout and you will learn to use the paper to create color and form as well as light and shadow. No collage experience is required. Previous experience with painting is helpful but not necessary.

In addition, do you desire to learn how to layer washes to create more realistic, luminescent, intense colors and values? J. M. Littleton will reveal her process of how she begins with a preliminary drawing and layering light washes to develop them into realistic images. Students will enjoy learning these concepts through lecture, discussion, demonstration & personal instruction and they will practice executing flat and gradated washes. In addition, students will learn the meaning and uses of color theory to enhance the depth of field in their paintings. Further, participants will bring in images (with a strong light source) of subject matter that interests them, to develop a painting. Though Ms. Littleton focuses on wildlife painting in her own work, the realistic techniques she teaches are applicable for all subject matter including still life, landscape, figure, portrait and marine painting.

Instructor: Denyse Schmidt

A former graphic designer and graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Denyse Schmidt has been sewing since she was a young girl, taught by her mother. As a professional seamstress, Denyse worked on everything from tutus and bishop’s mitres to fine clothing. She brings these eclectic influences together in patchwork quilts characterized by simple graphics, rich color, and quality workmanship. Firmly rooted in the techniques of quilt-making in this country, Denyse reinterprets tradition to make modern functional quilts that are fresh and offbeat. Her Couture custom quilts, in production since 1996, are pieced to order in her studio and hand-quilted by Amish women in Minnesota. Denyse Schmidt Works, a line of machine-quilted pillows and quilts with an industrial-chic aesthetic, are made at her studio located in a Bridgeport, CT factory building. Clients of DSQ have included The Philip Johnson Glass House, Ralph Pucci International, Takashimaya, The University of Michigan Art Museum, The American Folk Art Museum, and The Whitney Museum Store.

Denyse’s licensing partnerships include books and stationery featuring her quilts and fabric designs with Chronicle Books; a new book Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration with Stewart, Tabori & Chang (Spring 2012); vintage-inspired consumer fabrics with FreeSpirit/Westminster Fibers Lifestyle Fabrics; fabric for chain store distribution under the name DS Quilts Collection with Fabric Traditions; quilt patterns for McCall Pattern Company; and Denyse Schmidt Designs for Sarita Handa, an affordable line of high-quality quilts and accessories that were distributed through boutique and specialty shops worldwide, as well as catalogs and stores such as Pottery Barn, Land of Nod, Crate & Barrel, Neiman Marcus, Maine Cottage Furniture, and ABC Carpets.

Denyse’s journals and drawings are featured in Drawing From Life, The Journal as Art by Jennifer New (Princeton Architectural Press, June 2005). Her quilts are featured in American Contemporary Furniture (Rizzoli International Publications, 2000), and Diamond Baratta Design (Bulfinch, 2006). Denyse’s approach to design and business, and her work has been celebrated in print, including Craft Inc. by Meg Mateo Ilasco (Chronicle Books, 2007), You Can Do It by Lauren Catuzzi Grancolas (Chronicle Books, 2005), and The Crafter Culture Handbook by Amy Spencer (Marion Boyers, 2007). Denyse recently wrote the foreward to the Modern Quilt Guild’s first book, Block Party by Alissa Haight Carlton and Kristen Lejnieks (Stash Books, 2011).

Denyse’s work has been published in hundreds of distinguished magazines and newspapers world wide, including: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times Magazine, TIME, American Craft, Yankee Magazine, O the Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Better Homes & Gardens, House Beautiful, Country Living, Town & Country and People Magazine. She has appeared on several national television shows, including Martha Stewart Living. Her work has been exhibited around the country. Denyse Schmidt was born in 1961 and grew up in central Massachusetts, surrounded by the textile mill towns prevalent in that area. She lives in Bridgeport, CT.

Testimonial:

“One of the things I love most about JAC is how much heart it has. Everyone there loves what they do and shows up with such passion and warmth. Every time I walk through the door, I feel this. I’ve come to look forward to feeling this. It makes me realize how lucky I am that the JAC is there.” – Justin Morris, South County Resident
