Everyday Drawing (Virtual Workshop) with Lisa Barsumian

Ages : Adults

Join JAC Instructor Lisa Barsumian in her studio for a drawing class via Zoom.

Right now, we are learning to slow down and stay in place. It’s a good moment to take the time to draw.

Drawing is a practice. Learning to draw is learning to see. We will use simple lines in black ink on white paper to draw the everyday objects that surround us. Coffee cups, a spoon, a favorite shoe, a vase of flowers. Through the 8 week class students will explore drawing from life and from photos.

Please register below and we will reply with the Zoom code for the class. Once you have registered, please go to Zoom each Monday at 10:00 am, go to “Join A Meeting” and enter the code.

NEW! Outdoor Pastel with Jane Robbins

Ages : Adults

This class will safely follow all social distancing protocols! Please see our Education COVID-19 guidelines here.

Join instructor Jane Robbins in a pleasant, outdoor morning pastel class this Fall! This class will be held under shade of tents behind the Jamestown Arts Center.

This class explores the virtues and versatility of soft pastel as a painting medium, and the techniques and methods used to produce the characteristics that pastel is particularly known for: brilliant color, vibrant light, and matte surface effects from delicate and velvety to bold and textural. Over the course of the class we will cover the pros and cons of different surfaces/papers and materials; elements of composition, color, edges, and value; working methods, including straight and underpainting approaches and methods of mark-making; and the all-important skill of evaluating and adjusting your work as you go. There will be a short demo in one of these areas in each class, followed by a mix of fun exercises to practice techniques; free painting in your subject area of interest; and review and assessment of our efforts. The overarching goal of the class is to build knowledge and confidence in handling this beautiful medium. Each student will receive individualized attention as they work.

Outdoor Mosaics: Found Objects from Nature and the Attic (Fridays)

Ages : Adults

This class will safely follow all social distancing protocols! Please see our Education COVID-19 guidelines here.

With all this time off, you may have found yourself cleaning out your closets, drawers and the attic and discovering small objects, reminders of past events from different times in your life. These little treasures jog memories that may have sat quietly in your brain until now.

At the same time, you may have escaped the indoors for a walk on the beach, along the shoreline rocks or down wooded paths and have collected rocks, shells, sea glass, seeds, cones and more. These found objects may also have triggered important memories from the past.

What to do with these beautiful found objects? In this 4-class session, we will meet outdoors at appropriately distanced, individual tables to gather our materials and create an exciting art piece. Each class will run about 3 hours. Please bring a mask and plan to wear it when you circulate around each other’s tables to gather ideas.

Please note that this class will meet inside the JAC studio in the case of cold or inclement weather!

Scholarships available! Please contact seamus@jamestownartcenter.org for more information.
