Jane Mitchell believes that when children are given continuous opportunities to express themselves through the arts, doors open in their minds and hearts. Art honors the self awareness of each child.

The study of natural beauty offers children a connection with art and science that awakens imagination and curiousity.

Symmetry, pattern, metamorphosis, for example, are all basic elements to both art and science. When these are explores using the five senses, children are able to develop an inquisitive, focussed, expressive foundation to move forth with through life.

• planting bulbs in children's garden

Winter      New England winter

• winter birds, migration, bird feeders
• evergreens in the children's winter garden
• snowflakes, frost patterns, symmetry
• animals in hibernation

Spring     renewal and growth

• bulbs and planting seeds in the children's garden
• patterns in flowers
• peepers and tadpoles, drawing series, metamorphosis
• Japanese woodcuts and lanterns, Impressionist paintings

Summer      solstice

• in the garden, drawing flowers, Monet's garden, birds
• fairies - building a fairy house
• patterns in bees, honeycombs, plants
