Learn hand building and wheel-throwing techniques in a fun and supportive environment! Campers will be introduced to the techniques of pinch pots, coils, slabs, the potters’ wheel, and combined building techniques. Exploring texture, contrast, colors, and form are also important parts of children’s journey with clay. Come experiment, learn, and have fun in the JAC Ceramics Studio! Limestone carving is a satisfying and useful skill which has numerous applications for gardens, landscaping, and creative expression. In this 12-hour introductory-level workshop, students will use manageable scraps of limestone and carve them in relief-bring your own idea or utilize teacher references, and in the process learn something of an art form that has graced buildings and monuments from the Assyrians onward. Included will be plenty of stone lore, tips on securing materials and tools, and information about techniques including polishing and finishing. Please note: This workshop does not include instruction in carving letters. An additional $12 materials fee must be paid directly to the instructor on the first day of class.

Sgraffito is an ornamentation technique in which a surface layer of one color is incised to reveal a ground of contrasting color. In ceramics this can be accomplished by applying colored slip or underglaze and then carving designs into leather hard pots before bisque firing. In this demonstration attendees will learn how to successfully manage all the stages of this process as well as tips and techniques for successful designs.
This is the first of four Advanced Clay Techniques the JAC is offering this year from acclaimed ceramicist Christine Herron of Red Chair Studio Clay!

7TH ANNUAL LANTERN WORKSHOPS, PARADE AND FESTIVAL
FREE Family-Friendly Event – All ages and abilities welcome!
Join us in one of our FREE handcrafted lantern-making workshops and take part in our Jamestown parade, and meet us back at the JAC Gallery for refreshments. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Lantern-builders must provide their own battery-operated light source (such as a flashlight or string lights), other materials provided. Donations of recyclable building materials such as translucent plastic bottles and containers, sticks to hang lanterns on and parade with, thin sticks to make frameworks, and wet-strength tissue paper are most welcome. Consider bringing old lampshades, broken umbrellas or anything else that can be transformed into a translucent structure!
This 7th Annual JAC Lantern Parade begins AND ends at the Jamestown Arts Center, followed by a spectacular Festival in the JAC Gallery! All are welcome to join the festivities and participate in the magic. All lanterns are welcome at the parade and festival, especially lanterns from previous parades. Please NO candles. Dress warmly!

Join Encaustic painter Kelly Milukas to explore the versatility of Encaustic wax painting and pigments! Applied and tooled with low-heat and high-octane instruments, and brushes from a molten wax palette, it is truly an outstanding journey in art making! This fast-paced workshop will introduce all the necessary skills and knowledge to make Encaustic part of your creative process.
The workshop is open to all, but the main focus will be introductory: covering the basics. It’s perfect for those who are new to the medium, and those looking for an uncomplicated overview of setting up a safe studio and learning current best practices, painting and fusing encaustic layers, and use of mark-making tools. It’s equally beneficial for those with some Encaustics experience who would like a refresher and some independent painting time. Mornings will be dedicated to demonstrations and instructor-led exercises, while afternoons will be a time for students to work on projects of their own and to receive one-on-one and group feedback on content and technique. Participants will be encouraged to work at an individual pace, and can also expect to create a small series of works in a fun and convivial studio environment.

Kelly Milukas is an award-winning multi-media artist whose practice includes sculpture, pastel and encaustic painting, and fine art photography. Her “Keys to Cures” have been exhibited in many venues including The Ronald Reagan International Forum, in Washington, DC, the Museum at Palm Beach Photographic Centre, FL, and the Regenerative Medicine Forum in Berkeley, CA, among others. Her art work is in national museums, international private and corporate collections, such as The Boston Group; Intarcia Therapeutics; Simpson Healthcare; and Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, to name a few. She has served as a curator and juror and has presented talks in museums, arts and science forums, and arts organizations. She is a founding member of the South Coast Artists, RI & MA, and the President of the Providence Art Club.

Come experience the magic of printmaking! Students will learn a variety of printing techniques including monotype, collagraph, drypoint etching, and more. Using imagery, literature and world music, children will explore the basic elements of movement. Students will learn different rhythms, basic loco-motor movements, (marching, galloping, skipping, jumping, etc.) and create their own dances through improvisation. Learn hand building and wheel-throwing techniques in a fun and supportive environment! Campers will be introduced to the techniques of pinch pots, coils, slabs, the potters’ wheel, and combined building techniques. Exploring texture, contrast, colors, and form are also important parts of children’s journey with clay. Come experiment, learn, and have fun in the JAC Ceramics Studio! Limestone carving is a satisfying and useful skill which has numerous applications for gardens, landscaping, and creative expression. In this 12-hour introductory-level workshop, students will use manageable scraps of limestone and carve them in relief-bring your own idea or utilize teacher references, and in the process learn something of an art form that has graced buildings and monuments from the Assyrians onward. Included will be plenty of stone lore, tips on securing materials and tools, and information about techniques including polishing and finishing. Please note: This workshop does not include instruction in carving letters. An additional $12 materials fee must be paid directly to the instructor on the first day of class.

7TH ANNUAL LANTERN WORKSHOPS, PARADE AND FESTIVAL
FREE Family-Friendly Event – All ages and abilities welcome!
Join us in one of our FREE handcrafted lantern-making workshops and take part in our Jamestown parade, and meet us back at the JAC Gallery for refreshments. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Lantern-builders must provide their own battery-operated light source (such as a flashlight or string lights), other materials provided. Donations of recyclable building materials such as translucent plastic bottles and containers, sticks to hang lanterns on and parade with, thin sticks to make frameworks, and wet-strength tissue paper are most welcome. Consider bringing old lampshades, broken umbrellas or anything else that can be transformed into a translucent structure!
This 7th Annual JAC Lantern Parade begins AND ends at the Jamestown Arts Center, followed by a spectacular Festival in the JAC Gallery! All are welcome to join the festivities and participate in the magic. All lanterns are welcome at the parade and festival, especially lanterns from previous parades. Please NO candles. Dress warmly!

Come experience the magic of printmaking! Students will learn a variety of printing techniques including monotype, collagraph, drypoint etching, and more. The instructor will give a demonstration each week to exhibit a new technique. Students will be encouraged to combine techniques to create complex, layered imagery. Students will also learn inking and wiping techniques using akua (soy-based) inks and will learn how to use the studio’s etching press. No experience needed!
