Summer Camp: Tales Retold with Jamestown Community Theatre

Ages : 9 - 15

unnamed-1“Acting,” Sanford Meisner once said, “is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” What better example is there of telling truths imaginatively than the fairy tale, a genre central to the theatrical tradition? In this course, campers will develop contemporary takes on classic fairy tales, using modern retellings to reveal “truths” imaginatively disguised. Campers will be introduced to acting, improvisation, and storytelling techniques, and each camper will be assigned one or more roles in a compilation of fairy-tales. The course will conclude with a performance on Friday morning for parents and friends.  This camp is especially designed for children and teens entering grades 4 through 9. Read this great article in the Jamestown Press about last year’s camp with the JCT!

Summer Camp: Sticks & Stones & Ice Cream Cones

Ages : 6 - 12

For children, ephemeral art, sometimes called “land art” is an extension of our natural instincts to play and experiment with whatever is at our fingertips. We will get outside, connect with nature, touch and feel and explore the natural canvas of textures, colors, and objects that surround us. Land art can be created in a small garden, on the beach, in the branches of a tree, even on water! We can use leaves, shells, bark, pebbles, twigs, acorns, seeds, berries – like pencil or paint on paper, natural objects can provide color, contrast, texture, expression, and intrigue. And, yes, we will eat some ice cream, too! Please wear appropriate clothing, as there is potential for spills and stains. Campers should bring a snack and water bottle each day.

Summer Camp: Mini Fools’ Rules — Recyclable Sculptures

Ages : 6 - 12

Have you ever thought to build something out of materials that you normally consider trash? Recyclable Sculptures Camp allows campers to see “trash” in a new light! We will be creating large and small scale sculptures using materials such as bottle caps, plastic containers and bottles, styrofoam, bubble wrap, wood scraps and anything else that you might normally find hanging out in the trash can or recycling bin at home. Campers will create these sculptures with an emphasis on artistic design, creativity and function.

Mini Fools Rules is inspired by the Annual Fools Rules Regatta held in Jamestown every summer, where participants build a life-sized boat out of unconventional materials, to race at East Ferry Beach. We will not be making sculptural boats that are large enough to actually sail, but sculptures should be made with the intention to float at East Ferry for the last class. Each camper will receive an award: most creative, most likely to stay afloat, most luxurious, etc. Camp participants will be encouraged to bring in recyclable materials to build their artistic float. The last session will be held at East Ferry Beach in Jamestown to sail our Mini Fools’ Rules Sculptures — family and friends are welcome to come watch!

Please wear appropriate clothing, as there is potential for spills and stains. Campers should bring a snack and water bottle each day.

Intermediate Printmaking (Thursdays)

Ages : Adults & Teens

printmaking_independent-st

This class is designed for individuals who have previously taken a printmaking course and want to continue printing, but are not ready to venture into the print room on their own. It is designed for printers that enjoy working in a group setting, where they can brainstorm their visions and bounce ideas off of other students and the instructor. This unique printmaking course revolves around the idea of an “independent study“, working independently to practice techniques previously learned with assistance from the instructor when needed. The instructor will give a demonstration each week to exhibit a new technique, or as a refresher for those who have learned it previously. Students will be encouraged to collaborate and share their own knowledge and process with the class. The hope is that once students take this course, they will feel comfortable joining the JAC Printmaking Open Studio independently.

Ages 9 – 15. Campers should bring a snack and bottled water.

Testimonial:

“One of the things I love most about JAC is how much heart it has. Everyone there loves what they do and shows up with such passion and warmth. Every time I walk through the door, I feel this. I’ve come to look forward to feeling this. It makes me realize how lucky I am that the JAC is there.” – Justin Morris, South County Resident
