Make it a Full Day by adding Half Day Creative Arts Camp in the afternoon! Go to Complete Registration Info to see the option (ages 9-12 only).

Shakespeare is often heralded as one of the greatest playwrights the world has ever known. In this program, we introduce campers to the artistry and poetry of Shakespeare in an accessible and fun program designed specifically for upper-elementary and middle/early high school children. Campers will enjoy five half days of camp learning the basics of theatre terminology and technique, work briefly with authentic Shakespearean verse, and perform an abridged and simplified version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The class will foster creativity and interpretation. Campers will develop enhanced acting skills, with a stress on using voice and gesture. Starting with exercises and games, campers will develop their own style and enjoy solo and group versions of various characters that will build to scenes, thereby creating a safe and welcoming environment for kids to explore their originality and spontaneity.

Parents will be invited to a demonstration on Friday.

Summer Camp: Sticks & Stones & Ice Cream Cones

Ages : 6 - 12

For children, ephemeral art, sometimes called “land art” is an extension of our natural instincts to play and experiment with whatever is at our fingertips. We will get outside, connect with nature, touch and feel and explore the natural canvas of textures, colors, and objects that surround us. Land art can be created in a small garden, on the beach, in the branches of a tree, even on water! We can use leaves, shells, bark, pebbles, twigs, acorns, seeds, berries – like pencil or paint on paper, natural objects can provide color, contrast, texture, expression, and intrigue. And, yes, we will eat some ice cream, too! Please wear appropriate clothing, as there is potential for spills and stains.

Campers should bring a snack and water bottle each day.

  • Dates: Monday - Friday, July 3 – 7, 12:00pm - 3:00pm (The JAC is closed on Tuesday, July 4th- NO CLASS)

Summer Camp: Mini Fools’ Rules — Recyclable Sculptures

Ages 6 - 12

Have you ever thought to build something out of materials that you normally consider trash? Recyclable Sculptures Camp allows campers to see “trash” in a new light! We will be creating large and small scale sculptures using materials such as bottle caps, plastic containers and bottles, styrofoam, bubble wrap, wood scraps and anything else that you might normally find hanging out in the trash can or recycling bin at home. Campers will create these sculptures with an emphasis on artistic design, creativity and function.

Mini Fools Rules is inspired by the Annual Fools Rules Regatta held in Jamestown every summer, where participants build a life-sized boat out of unconventional materials, to race at East Ferry Beach. We will not be making sculptural boats that are large enough to actually sail, but sculptures should be made with the intention to float at East Ferry for the last class. Each camper will receive an award: most creative, most likely to stay afloat, most luxurious, etc. Camp participants will be encouraged to bring in recyclable materials to build their artistic float. The last session will be held at East Ferry Beach in Jamestown to sail our Mini Fools’ Rules Sculptures — family and friends are welcome to come watch!

Please wear appropriate clothing, as there is potential for spills and stains. Campers should bring a snack and water bottle each day.

Bright And Mellow: Plein Air Spring Landscape Painting with Elizabeth Congdon (Wednesdays and Saturdays – Morning and Evening Sessions)

Ages : Adults & Teens

This class concentrates on capturing the nuances of the season as the vivid New England colors take hold over the muted winter landscape. How do we handle pure color so that it pops but does not overwhelm our canvas? How do we manage the changeable springtime weather and maintain a consistent routine of painting the season coming into bloom? This class explores ways to streamline your plein-air practice, shake up your default mode of working, and jump into your next artistic level. This class will feature demos and personal instruction on various island sites, depending on weather.
