NEW! Still Life Oil Painting Workshops with Elizabeth Congdon!

Ages : Adults

These two-day workshops are designed to develop skills and access creativity by focusing on different aspects of still life painting. Develop confidence in art-making, and learn to enjoy the process! These workshops can be taken partially or as a full series. See below for the menu of options! All levels welcome!

Simple Start

Learn or reacquaint yourself with the basics of oil painting. We will paint a simple still life of fruit, focusing on composition, color mixing and line, with the goal of breaking down the complexities of what we see into simple images we can paint.

Dates: September 24th and 25th, 9 am – 1 pm

Fee: $135 (Members $121.50)

The Active Still Life

Still life paintings can be full of movement when we use line to infuse our compositions with gesture and study the fall of light.  We will paint a still life of flowers and fabric as we explore the motion that organic growth creates and utilize folded fabric to move the eye throughout our canvas.

Dates: October 15th and 16th, 9 am – 1 pm

Fee: $135 (Members $121.50)

Pattern Play

Using patterns in a still life is a wonderful way to bring vibrancy to your work with color and line. We will investigate the rhythm of color and light through close observation of natural patterns of flowers and fruit, fabric, baskets and ceramics.

Dates: October 22nd and 23rd, 9 am – 1 pm

Fee: $135 (Members $121.50)

The Value of Color

In this workshop we will concentrate on the visual language of color value. A dramatically lit floral still life will help us discover the effect that light and shadow has upon the saturation, muting and contrast of color, with the goal of learning to create nuance and luminosity with oil paint.

Dates: November 12th and 13th, 9 am – 1 pm

Fee: $135 (Members $121.50)

Finish That Painting

This workshop gives painters the opportunity to develop and finish the painting under the guidance of an instructor. Demos will include how to convey space, form and light through viscosity, glazing transparent pigments and scumbling opaque pigments. Students will also be encouraged to develop a discerning eye to identify what they like about their work in order to fix what they do not like about their work. If you have a painting from this or another class, or your home studio, you are welcome to bring it! All subjects welcome!

Dates: November 26th and 27th, 9 am – 1 pm

Fee: $135 (Members $121.50)

ALL FIVE WORKSHOPS: $625 (Members $562.50)

NEW! Biography and Social Art Workshop

Ages : Adults

Come retreat into the silence of your heart and let your life story speak to you. Biography work is a set of tools for working with others to better understand yourself and other people, and what it means to be human. By reflecting back on past experiences, common threads and patterns start to become apparent. Sharing and receiving these stories with others in a safe space can often allow new insights to emerge. We use a variety of entry points, including fairy tales, postcards and artistic activities to help us bring past experiences into view. www.biographysocialart.org

Date: Saturday, October 27, 9am – 12pm

Fee: $50 (Members $45)

NEW DAY! Printmaking: Advanced (Mondays)

Ages : Adults & Teens

printmaking_independent-st

This class is designed for individuals who have previously taken a printmaking course and want to continue printing, but are not ready to venture into the print room on their own. It is designed for printers that enjoy working in a group setting, where they can brainstorm their visions and bounce ideas off of other students and the instructor. This unique printmaking course revolves around the idea of an “independent study“, working independently to practice techniques previously learned with assistance from the instructor when needed. The instructor will give a demonstration each week to exhibit a new technique, or as a refresher for those who have learned it previously. Students will be encouraged to collaborate and share their own knowledge and process with the class. The hope is that once students take this course, they will feel comfortable joining the JAC Printmaking Open Studio independently.

Dates: Mondays, September 17 – October 22, 6:30pm – 8:30pm (5 classes, 2 hrs/each – NO CLASS ON COLUMBUS DAY 10/8!)
