PHOTOGRAPHY 101 WORKSHOPS WITH ONNE VAN DER WALTEDx0108

onne-van-der-wal_a-gallery-logolg

Come and join Onne as he explains in a clear, concise and humorous way, how to use your DSLR. He will discuss and show examples both on the big screen and in his popular little Photography Reference Guide (included in the photo class fee).

Stop using the P or Auto (Bozo) mode on your camera and start using ALL the settings that the real pros use to create stunning imagery.

YOU need to be in control of your camera not the camera in charge of you! It’s not rocket science!  Once you discover what all the dials do, you will realize that’s its actually quite easy to be the master of your DSLR camera!

The first class covers the basic camera controls, He will discuss exposure, aperture, ISO and how to set up your camera correctly, the importance of the histogram plus the benefits of shooting in RAW format not JPEG. The second class is about workflow and post production, how to download your files from the camera and organize them in a simple method and how to process the files in Lightroom.

Onne will use his laptop and projector to illustrate and explain it all. All you need to bring is a note pad and pencil and your DSLR, if you have one. If you are in the market for a new camera and/or lens we can let you know what the affordable options are.

This class is aimed at anyone who wants to learn the basics of digital photography or the advanced amateur that wants to polish up on his/her photo skills and get to the next level with their photography. This is not an iPhone or Point and Shoot photo class.

Two sessions: Tuesdays, January 21 and 28, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.

Cost: $195 for both nights

For more details: please call the Onne van der Wal Gallery at 401.846.9552

Instructor Bio:

onne-van-der-wal_smaller-headshot

Onne van der Wal is one of the most prolific and talented marine photographers in the world of sailing. He was born in Holland on February 24, 1956 and raised in Hout Bay, South Africa. Before he learned to walk, he learned to sail aboard his grandfather’s boat. After he progressed through youth sailing training programs, he discovered his passion, ocean racing.

As the bowman and engineer aboard the Dutch maxi-boat Flyer II, van der Wal won all four legs of the 1981-82 Whitbread Round the World Race. Along the way, he took his camera with him everywhere he went, even to the top of the mast and the end of the spinnaker pole.

In addition to editorial work, Onne, who is based out of Newport, Rhode Island, has shot for blue chip commercial clients, including Hinckley Yachts, J Boats, North Sails, and Harken.

While he has an artist’s eye for composition and color, Onne is also a perfectionist when it comes to the technical aspects of his craft. As a member of the elite Canon Explorers of Light, a group of the most influential photographers and cinematographers in the world, he is always pushing the equipment  and the technology forward.

He was one of the first marine photographers to go all digital, and is an early adopter of shooting with drones to get that unique perspective that is higher than a stepladder, but lower than a helicopter. He often works with equipment manufacturers to improve their gear and shot the 2013 America’s Cup with a prototype Canon 4K video camera.

Gary Jobson, who won the America’s Cup as tactician aboard Courageous said, “With Onne’s pictures, you feel like you are either on board or you want to be on board. The cool thing about our sport is everything changes, all the time: the wind, the waves, the light, and the sail trim. Onne anticipates those changes to capture beautiful images.”

Despite all of the accolades and accomplishments over a career that has covered more than three decades and all seven seas, Onne van der Wal is always looking forward to the next assignment. With a smile, he said, “There are two things I need to do great work. One is wind and the other is sun.” To see more of Onne van der Wal’s work, visit vanderwal.com.

Instructor: Denyse Schmidt

A former graphic designer and graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Denyse Schmidt has been sewing since she was a young girl, taught by her mother. As a professional seamstress, Denyse worked on everything from tutus and bishop’s mitres to fine clothing. She brings these eclectic influences together in patchwork quilts characterized by simple graphics, rich color, and quality workmanship. Firmly rooted in the techniques of quilt-making in this country, Denyse reinterprets tradition to make modern functional quilts that are fresh and offbeat. Her Couture custom quilts, in production since 1996, are pieced to order in her studio and hand-quilted by Amish women in Minnesota. Denyse Schmidt Works, a line of machine-quilted pillows and quilts with an industrial-chic aesthetic, are made at her studio located in a Bridgeport, CT factory building. Clients of DSQ have included The Philip Johnson Glass House, Ralph Pucci International, Takashimaya, The University of Michigan Art Museum, The American Folk Art Museum, and The Whitney Museum Store.

Denyse’s licensing partnerships include books and stationery featuring her quilts and fabric designs with Chronicle Books; a new book Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration with Stewart, Tabori & Chang (Spring 2012); vintage-inspired consumer fabrics with FreeSpirit/Westminster Fibers Lifestyle Fabrics; fabric for chain store distribution under the name DS Quilts Collection with Fabric Traditions; quilt patterns for McCall Pattern Company; and Denyse Schmidt Designs for Sarita Handa, an affordable line of high-quality quilts and accessories that were distributed through boutique and specialty shops worldwide, as well as catalogs and stores such as Pottery Barn, Land of Nod, Crate & Barrel, Neiman Marcus, Maine Cottage Furniture, and ABC Carpets.

Denyse’s journals and drawings are featured in Drawing From Life, The Journal as Art by Jennifer New (Princeton Architectural Press, June 2005). Her quilts are featured in American Contemporary Furniture (Rizzoli International Publications, 2000), and Diamond Baratta Design (Bulfinch, 2006). Denyse’s approach to design and business, and her work has been celebrated in print, including Craft Inc. by Meg Mateo Ilasco (Chronicle Books, 2007), You Can Do It by Lauren Catuzzi Grancolas (Chronicle Books, 2005), and The Crafter Culture Handbook by Amy Spencer (Marion Boyers, 2007). Denyse recently wrote the foreward to the Modern Quilt Guild’s first book, Block Party by Alissa Haight Carlton and Kristen Lejnieks (Stash Books, 2011).

Denyse’s work has been published in hundreds of distinguished magazines and newspapers world wide, including: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times Magazine, TIME, American Craft, Yankee Magazine, O the Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Better Homes & Gardens, House Beautiful, Country Living, Town & Country and People Magazine. She has appeared on several national television shows, including Martha Stewart Living. Her work has been exhibited around the country. Denyse Schmidt was born in 1961 and grew up in central Massachusetts, surrounded by the textile mill towns prevalent in that area. She lives in Bridgeport, CT.

Torn Paper Paintings Workshop with Wanda Edwards

Ages : Adults

Learn a figurative collage technique using bits of torn paper! Similar to Impressionists use of colors or the tiles in a mosaic, Torn Paper Paintings’ unconventional collage technique creates this same visual interest. We will explore hand painting and designing of our own papers to be used in the piece. Rice papers, book pages, maps, store-bought papers, as well as personal ephemera will be applied over a simple under-painting (done at home as class prep) in a painterly fashion. The collage process will be demonstrated throughout and you will learn to use the paper to create color and form as well as light and shadow. No collage experience is required. Previous experience with painting is helpful but not necessary.
