Ages : 6 - 12

The JAC is evaluating the feasibility of Summer Camp programs in the context of social distancing.  We will confirm program plans for summer programs by May 31st.  In the case of cancelations, all Summer Camp fees will be refunded.

For children, ephemeral art, sometimes called “land art” is an extension of our natural instincts to play and experiment with whatever is at our fingertips. We will get outside, connect with nature, touch and feel and explore the natural canvas of textures, colors, and objects that surround us. Land art can be created in a small garden, on the beach, in the branches of a tree, even on water! We can use leaves, shells, bark, pebbles, twigs, acorns, seeds, berries – like pencil or paint on paper, natural objects can provide color, contrast, texture, expression, and intrigue. Please wear appropriate clothing, as there is potential for spills and stains. Campers should bring a snack and water bottle each day.

This camp is inspired by the 2020 Outdoor Arts Experience, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the JAC! Read more about the OAE Exhibition here.

If you’ve ever taken part in the JAC’s Lantern Workshops and Parade, you’ll love this camp! Students will spend the week creating handcrafted lanterns and learn about illuminated sculpture and light art, which is any kind of artwork that uses light as a medium. For this camp all materials are provided, however donations of recyclable building materials such as translucent plastic bottles and containers, sticks to hang lanterns on, thin sticks to make frameworks, and wet-strength tissue paper are most welcome. Consider bringing old lampshades, broken umbrellas or anything else that can be transformed into a translucent structure! Please NO candles!

This camp will prepare students for the 8th Annual JAC Lantern Parade which is scheduled for Jamestown Day, October 3, 2020! This year’s parade will leave from the Jamestown Arts Center at 6:15 on 10/15 and march down to East Ferry Beach, to take part in the lighting of the communal bonfire. All lanterns are welcome to join the parade, especially lanterns from previous parades.

Join the festivities and participate in the magic!

Summer Camp: Outdoor Arts Camp III (Recyclable Sculptures)

Ages : 6 - 12

The JAC is evaluating the feasibility of Summer Camp programs in the context of social distancing.  We will confirm program plans for summer programs by May 31st.  In the case of cancelations, all Summer Camp fees will be refunded.

Have you ever thought to build something out of materials that you normally consider trash? This camp allows campers to see “trash” in a new light! We will be creating large and small scale sculptures using materials such as bottle caps, plastic containers and bottles, styrofoam, bubble wrap, wood scraps and anything else that you might normally find hanging out in the trash can or recycling bin at home. Campers will create these sculptures with an emphasis on artistic design, creativity and function.

This camp is inspired by the Annual Fools Rules Regatta organized by the Jamestown Yacht Club every summer, where for the past 40 years participants build life-sized boats out of unconventional materials. We will not be making sculptural boats that are large enough to actually sail, but sculptures should be made with the intention to float. Each camper will receive an award: most creative, most likely to stay afloat, most luxurious, etc. Camp participants will be encouraged to bring in recyclable materials to build their artistic boat. The last session will be held at East Ferry Beach in Jamestown to sail our Mini Fools’ Rules sculptures — family and friends are welcome to come watch!

This camp is inspired by the 2020 Outdoor Arts Experience, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the JAC! Read more about the OAE Exhibition here.

Summer Camp: FLASH MOB! with Jamestown Community Theatre

Ages : 9 - 15

The JAC is evaluating the feasibility of Summer Camp programs in the context of social distancing.  We will confirm program plans for summer programs by May 31st.  In the case of cancelations, all Summer Camp fees will be refunded.

Join us for this collaborative camp with the Jamestown Community Theatre! Flash mobs are an emergent form of performance art, in which participants assemble in a public space, perform, and disperse. Flash mobs create art and entertainment in a generally scripted, but seemingly spontaneous and unexpected way. This art form draws on a number of theatrical skills, including singing, choreography, and improvisation. Over the course of the week, children will cultivate these skills as they create a flash mob of their own, which they will perform in designated locations on the final day of camp.  This camp is especially designed for children and teens entering grades 4 through 9.

Looking and Seeing: Colors and Shapes! (“Art From Home” Downloadable Project)

Ages : All ages!

This is a fun activity that teaches children the basic foundation of drawing from observation.
We will do this by attempting to copy one of your children’s favorite cartoon characters by observing the Colors and Shapes that you see.

Supplies: paper, colored markers or pencils, and children’s books to draw from.

First, ask your children to bring out some of their picture books, and pick out some of their favorite characters.
This is a great chance to get to know some of the characters your children like, as well as helping them connect to your project.
For this activity, we picked Dory!

This is a great, simple daily exercise. Don’t forget to always have FUN!

Instructor: Denyse Schmidt

A former graphic designer and graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Denyse Schmidt has been sewing since she was a young girl, taught by her mother. As a professional seamstress, Denyse worked on everything from tutus and bishop’s mitres to fine clothing. She brings these eclectic influences together in patchwork quilts characterized by simple graphics, rich color, and quality workmanship. Firmly rooted in the techniques of quilt-making in this country, Denyse reinterprets tradition to make modern functional quilts that are fresh and offbeat. Her Couture custom quilts, in production since 1996, are pieced to order in her studio and hand-quilted by Amish women in Minnesota. Denyse Schmidt Works, a line of machine-quilted pillows and quilts with an industrial-chic aesthetic, are made at her studio located in a Bridgeport, CT factory building. Clients of DSQ have included The Philip Johnson Glass House, Ralph Pucci International, Takashimaya, The University of Michigan Art Museum, The American Folk Art Museum, and The Whitney Museum Store.

Denyse’s licensing partnerships include books and stationery featuring her quilts and fabric designs with Chronicle Books; a new book Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration with Stewart, Tabori & Chang (Spring 2012); vintage-inspired consumer fabrics with FreeSpirit/Westminster Fibers Lifestyle Fabrics; fabric for chain store distribution under the name DS Quilts Collection with Fabric Traditions; quilt patterns for McCall Pattern Company; and Denyse Schmidt Designs for Sarita Handa, an affordable line of high-quality quilts and accessories that were distributed through boutique and specialty shops worldwide, as well as catalogs and stores such as Pottery Barn, Land of Nod, Crate & Barrel, Neiman Marcus, Maine Cottage Furniture, and ABC Carpets.

Denyse’s journals and drawings are featured in Drawing From Life, The Journal as Art by Jennifer New (Princeton Architectural Press, June 2005). Her quilts are featured in American Contemporary Furniture (Rizzoli International Publications, 2000), and Diamond Baratta Design (Bulfinch, 2006).

This camp is inspired by the 2020 Outdoor Arts Experience, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the JAC! Read more about the OAE Exhibition here.

Campers should bring a snack and bottled water.

Testimonial:

“One of the things I love most about JAC is how much heart it has. Everyone there loves what they do and shows up with such passion and warmth. Every time I walk through the door, I feel this. I’ve come to look forward to feeling this. It makes me realize how lucky I am that the JAC is there.” – Justin Morris, South County Resident
