Creating the Jamestown Arts Center
The Jamestown Arts Center is a RI nonprofit corporation that is creating an educational and cultural center for Jamestown. Begun by Kate Petrie, Elizabeth Congdon, Dori Hirsch, Jocelyn Donaghue, and Jane Mitchell in 2007, JAC’s mission is to provide an enriching environment that inspires creativity for all through active participation in the arts.
JAC’s goal is to unite our community by embracing the arts in a beautiful Center that provides space for education, performance, and exhibition, as well as opportunities for employment, mentoring, outreach, internships, and patronage for our community. By creating the Jamestown Arts Center we can enrich our essential self-worth individually and collectively for years to come.
To turn the Jamestown Arts Center into a self-sustaining successful non-profit venture, JAC’s primary need is a home base in which many educational and community events can be coordinated, launched, and offered. After significant searching and reviewing the feasibility of several locations, the JAC has determined that that the property of 18 Valley Street will be an ideal location. The building is bold and exciting. Presently a space for boat repair this utilitarian structure will be easily renovated into studios for performance, rehearsal, education, and exhibition. Located next to the playground, library, schools and island businesses, 18 Valley Road is perfectly situated to become a central community facility for both islanders and visitors of all ages and interests.

JAC is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the flow of imagination and self-expression. We endeavor to create one central location to home art education, exhibition and rehearsal space, an open-air stage, and an interdisciplinary summer arts camps for children. Our line up of professional instructors will provide a wide range of classes for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Classes will be offered in dance, theater, music, writing, and the visual arts.
We envision JAC as accessible and inviting to all. We see JAC becoming a hub for our town, a hive of activity where resident and visitor alike may be inspired.
