Atlantic Sun is an indie/alt rock band originally formed at North Kingstown High School in Spring of 2015.
Founding members Ethan Heilig and Andrew Murray, friends since 7th grade, are both Juniors at NKHS and live in North Kingstown. Heilig, who has been playing guitar since he was 8 years-old and “will never stop,” is Lead Guitarist. Murray plays several instruments but decided to focus on guitar two years ago. He is on Rhythm Guitar.
The two Jamestown members, Lily Wright, a Senior, and Hope Benson, a Sophomore, have been friends since Benson moved to the island from Newport in 2009 (and they also happen to be distant cousins). Wright, the newest Sun member, is on Percussion and has been studying drumming with The Decemberist’s former drummer, Rachel Blumberg in Providence over the last year. Benson is the Bass Guitarist. She first taught herself to play bass in sixth grade. All members take turns sharing vocal duties.
They play a variety of music with a focus on high-energy alternative rock. They love to put their own mark on existing songs and are also composing original material. With four different members come many different musical influences ranging from The Arctic Monkeys, The Animals, Beck, The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant, Radiohead, Weezer, Twenty-One Pilots, and Hey Violet.
Ethan first met Hope through a mutual friend at school and invited her to join their then un-named band for a their first show at Anchor Down, a European Car Show to benefit The Wounded Warrior Project hosted by Sampson Automotive, LLC in North Kingstown in June. The show went so well, they have been invited to perform there again next year.
All four members of Atlantic Sun are very passionate about music and hope people enjoy what they have to offer.
